The years after

After the purchase of the house in 1898 Munch changed his motives and focus in his art, he now became more interested in the everyday life and people who lived in Åsgårdstrand.

Both they and the property now serve as models: Several images show young and older girls in Åsgårdstrand, beach life, portraits of the garden in different seasons of harvest and wood cutting as activities, and local fishermen.

And masterpieces like “Girls on the Bridge” was painted in this period.

The Girls on the Bridge is one of Edvard Munch's greatest artworks. He painted this motive in several different versions. He found the inspiration for it in Åsgårdstrand. «Pikene på broen» er et av Edvard Munchs store kunstverk og dette motivet malte han i flere ulike versjoner.
