The theme for the Fall exhibition explores how contemporary art reflects metafysical questions and beliefs. It exhibits both Norwegian and international artists who work within a broad spectrum of mediums such as painting, photography, installations, sculptures and video. The intent is to shed some light on how different types of religion and metafysical perspectives can be reflected in themes that actualise existential, humanistic or political issues.
In addition to the museum exhibition a selection of artists will also be presented in four of the churches in the region: Tønsberg domkirke, Nøtterøy kirke, Borre kirke and Botne kirke. The idea behind it is to create a dialogue between the contemporary art and the churches’ arcitecture and history, to explore how metafysical questions are expressed in the cultural understanding of the contemporary art.
Metafysica is Haugar Vestfold Art Museum’s contribution to a regional spotlight on Vestfold’s history from the medieval period, a history which is also presented in the Slottsfjell Museum’s exhibition Sanctus and Vestfold county’s opening of the Pilgrim’s Route. In collaborations with these participants, including the Litterature Week in Vestfold, the churches’ congregations, Tunsberg Bispedømme and volunteers, there will be artist conversations, talks, performance, theatres and concerts which all evolve around the belief and spirituality of today’s society.
