Haugar Art Museum 9. October 2022 at 13:00
Welcome to a lecture by the New York-based and renowned researcher and critic Blake Gopnik on Sunday the 9th of October
Gopnik is the researcher in residence (RiR) in Åsgårdstrand in autumn 2022.
Blake Gopnik is the author of Andy Warhol, the first comprehensive biography of the Pop artist, and in the spring of 2022 he began work on a biography of Albert Barnes, the great American collector of modern art. He has been an art critic at The Washington Post and Newsweek and is currently a regular contributor to the New York Times. He has a PhD in art history from the University of Oxford.
“Andy Warhol has often been seen as a naif — as an idiot savant or at least someone whose genius was almost accidental".
In his talk at the Haugar Art Museum, Warhol expert Blake Gopnik will show that, on the contrary, the artist was deeply sophisticated and highly knowledgeable about the art of his time. From his earliest years in Pittsburgh, Warhol was in close touch with the most experimental strands in Western art.
After he achieved success in New York, he collected art by some of the era’s most challenging and experimental figures: The sculptor Richard Serra, the performance artist Christ Burden, the conceptualist Joseph Kosuth — and of course Warhol’s great hero, Marcel Duchamp.”
The lecture begins at 13.00 and is included in the ticket price.
