"Polaris" was built in Sandefjord

One of the world’s most famous vessels was built in Sandefjord
Most people know of the connection between Sandefjord and whales and the whaling industry. The fact that one of the world’s best-known vessels was built at Framnes in Sandefjord is lesser known.

“Polaris” was built in 1912, but was renamed “Endurance” two years later when the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton purchased the ship. He took “Endurance” to the Antarctic, where she was screwed down into the ice in autumn 1915. The entire crew survived through great exertion and ingenuity.

A commemorative stone which tells of the dramatic story of the vessel was laid down at Huvik. The vessel’s infamy is only rivalled by the “Titanic”. When the museum re-opens, a newly produced film by Mirko Stopar about “Endurance” will be shown in the museum cellar. In the meantime you can watch the film here:
