Ernst van der Loo – Submerged
This is a work commissioned from Ernst van der Loo, a sound artist and composer.
We are taken from the surface of the sea to the dark, rich world of sound in the ocean. We hear, amongst other things, recordings of blue whales west of Monterey Bay in California. Blue whales have deep voices. Some of the material is played at a higher frequency to make it audible. The whale song is mixed in with other maritime sounds, for example noise made by human beings. The sound installation is an artistic presentation of the acoustic environment in the sea.
In the early 1970’s there was a growing awareness of whale song in the general population. This has led to increasing opposition to whaling and new knowledge about the lives of whales.
