Om utstillingen
På første halvdel av 1900-tallet var hvalfangsten en av de viktigste næringene i Vestfold. Hver tiende yrkesaktive vestfolding var hvalfanger.
Larviksrederiene Christian Nielsen & Co. og Melsom & Melsom spilte en betydningsfull rolle, både i utviklingen av hvalfangsten, og som arbeidsplass for tusenvis av menn fra Larviksdistriktet. I denne utstillingen forteller vi om Larviks historie som hvalfangstby.
I den lille maritime kinoen vises «På ekspedisjon med Norhval», som gir et innblikk i hvalfangsten gjennom flere fangstsesonger.
Utstillingen er kommet til i samarbeid med Foreningen Larvik Sjøfartsmuseum.
Larvik – the whaling town
In the first half of the twentieth century, whale hunting was one of the most important industries in Vestfold. One in ten adults of working age was a whaler.
The Larvik shipping lines Christian Nielsen & Co. and Melsom & Melsom played a significant role, both in the development of whale hunting and in providing employment for thousands of men in the Larvik district.
Our small maritime cinema shows “On the Whaling Grounds with Norhval”, which is a compilation of film records from many of Norhval’s whaling expeditions in the years 1945–1962. These films offer fascinating insights into one of Larvik’s main industries in the middle of last century.
