The main focus of the museum is the catching of the larger whale species in the Antarctic in the 1900’s. The collections are mainly of natural and cultural/historical interest and include the Whaling Collection, Sandefjord Town Museum collection, the Sandefjord Maritime Museum collection and the Sandar Village collection.
The Whaling Museum has an extensive photographic and film collection. A large book collection of litterature related to whales, whaling and the polar regions is available through Sandefjord’s Public Library. In addition, several hundred metres of historical archives are preserved at the Vestfold Archives. These are listed in «Norges dokumentarv» (Norway’s Document Heritage) which is under UNESCO’s list of world heritage documents.
