Green Vikings: Courses in basket- and twine making

Tuesday 15^th of August and Thursday 17^th of August

Where: The Viking Playground outside Midgard Viking Centre.

Our “Green Viking” courses focus on old crafts and the use of natural resources. These courses are designed to both teach about the Viking Age, but also practical skills and how to use and reuse material which many have in their homes, gardens and neighbourhoods.

During this course we will look at how basketmaking has been used in the past and create our own baskets out of different materials such as straw, reeds or hemp twine. You will learn how to make both woven and coiled basket.

The course is led by Kari Marie Helland. Kari works at Midgard Vikingsenter and is experienced in fiber technologies. She has given guest lectures and courses at many other museums including Tingvatn and Veien Cultural Heritage Park.

For adults. Max capacity is 16 people.

During this course we will look at how twine has been used and made in the past and create our own twine to take home. You will also learn simple techniques for how to use your twine to make pouches and bags out of strings.
